Digital Dead Sea Scrolls

The Great Isaiah Scroll

The restriction to access the unpublished 2000 year old manuscript was lifted, with the publication of the scrolls in Microfiche Edition and a Fascimile Edition in two folio volumes in 1991. The first CD-Rom of the scrolls “The Dead Sea Scrolls Revealed” was produced in 1994 by Pixel Multimedia, Tel Aviv, and Aaron Witkin Associates, London in association with the Israel Antiquities Authority under the exclusive license. A special version of this CD-ROM was presented by the producers, in conjunction with the Apple Computer, at the Scrolls exhibition held in the Vatican 1994.  This would be the first transformation of the manuscript turning on to the computer screen and this powerful multimedia database is capable of providing cross-references and with its notable technical features designed, it enables to navigate smoothly into the database in retrieving information.  With the release of the Dead Sea scrolls Electronic Reference Library you are able to search a collection of 2,700 images and the information database which includes bibliography, indices, biblical references and cross referencing between groups of images. This system enables the user to access the image and the information, based on the different labelling schemes PAM (Palestinian Archaeological Museum) and SHR (Shrine of the Book) numbers; Cave numbers; Scroll Title; Inventory numbers; Brill Microfiche page numbers; Facsimile numbers; Biblical References.
The latest and most intriguing development of the scrolls is that it could be accessed through the World Wide Web allowing users to examine and interact with the scrolls through their home computer, mobile phone and with the latest iphone. Israel Museum has partnered with Google and created a digitized version of the Dead Sea Scrolls to be available online and this project is known as the “Dead Sea Scrolls Digital Project”. A web-based database, of digital images that allows users to view, examine and study these manuscripts. The database provides searchable fast-loading, ultra-high-resolution images of the scrolls, background information, search query functionality, history and translations of the text as well. The five Dead Sea Scrolls that have gone through the digitizing process are the Great Isaiah Scroll, the Community Rule Scroll, The Commentary on Habakkuk Scroll, the Temple Scroll and the War Scroll.

For my final post I used mostly website as there was amount of information on digitization of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Following are the main sites I used to search for information on the digital process of the scrolls.
-The Israel Museum
-The Nazarene Way of Essenic Studies
-CenturyOne Bookstore
-Facsimile Edition site
-Douglas Mohrmann Page
